Student transportation safety is a shared responsibility between Dorchester County School District Four (DD4) and the South Carolina Department of Education. School buses used primarily for transporting students who live more than 1.5 miles from school are owned and maintained by the state. Buses used primarily for extracurricular activities are owned and maintained by the school district. School bus routes are managed by the school district according to state law and approved annually by the state. School bus driver training standards and certification are also administered by the state.
The DD4 Student Transportation Department administers the local portion of South Carolina's comprehensive student transportation safety program. Each day, we operate 24 general education route buses and three special needs route buses to support a district enrollment of 2,200 students across 336 square miles, servicing six schools and the Dorchester County Career and Technology Center. Extracurricular activities and athletic teams are transported on the district's five activity buses.
Our services extend beyond home-to-school transportation, encompassing field and athletic trips, after-school programs, and other essential transportation to support the academic excellence of DD4 students.
