In Our Classrooms: Woodland High School students joined Mr. Kiugu for a hands-on cultural activity as they prepared an authentic Kenyan breakfast featuring sweet mandazi, finger millet porridge, fried plantains, and a fresh salad. This nutritious meal is organic and naturally rich in calcium and potassium, making it ideal for all ages.

Mr. Kiugu shared his sincere appreciation to DD4 for the chance to celebrate his culture with students, teachers, and staff. The morning offered a meaningful exchange, blending the flavors of Kenya with a taste of American dishes.

Dorchester School District Four held its monthly Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday, November 18, featuring recognitions, celebrations, and important district updates. Officers were elected for the coming year: Board Chair Mrs. Phyllis Hughes, Vice Chair Mr. Tony Folk, and Secretary Dr. James Hodges.

The district recognized its October Everyday Heroes: Mrs. Carlie Nelson, Instructional Coach at WMES, Mrs. Angela Crosby, Benefits Coordinator and HR Specialist from the District Office, and Mrs. Tamara Rolack, Administrative Assistant and Bus Driver at WHS. Each honoree received a Certificate of Achievement and a Superintendent’s Challenge Coin for their outstanding service.

WMES music teacher Mr. Seth Phillips shared details about the $20,000 Distinguished Arts Program Grant that he and art teacher Mrs. Bevins secured. The grant will fund professional artist residencies in African drumming and dance, new Orff instruments and classroom music resources, 3D printers for visual art and STEAM projects, and enhanced support for student performances.

Director of Assessment and Accountability, Mrs. Shelissa Bowman, presented district and school report card data, highlighting strong gains at Woodland Middle and Woodland High. Superintendent Beckwith also recognized Board Chair Mrs. Phyllis Hughes for earning Level 5 through the South Carolina School Boards Association.

The next Board of Trustees meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 16 at 6 p.m.

Clay Hill Elementary hosted its Native American Heritage Celebration on Thursday during related arts.
